The 100 Black Men of Greater Columbia (100 BMOGC) is excited to present to you our 2009 Community Service Programs.
Our chapter has been serving the communities in the Columbia Metropolitan area since 1999, and with the selection and appointment of our new Executive Director, we are ready to reach new heights with the community service programs that are critical to meeting the needs of the communities we serve.
In 1995, former National President, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., unveiled an aggressive plan entitled "Four For The Future" to address four areas deemed critical to the future of our youth and community at large. The four critical areas are Mentoring, Education, Health and Wellness, and Economic Development.
Building on the momentum started in 1995 with the Four For The Future initiative, the 100 BMOGC took several measures to better align our chapter's programs with those four areas to strengthen our ties with the national office of the 100 Black Men of American, Inc.
The programs of the 100 BMOGC mirror the goals, precepts, and programs of the national body with the primary emphasis being on mentoring and education. The goal of the mentoring programs are to increase the interaction between youth and positive role models, and to develop programs to empower youth to succeed academically, culturally and socially,
To achieve the success that we have envisioned, we are extending our hand to organizations and businesses that have a vested interest in the growth and prosperity of the communities we serve.
The next step in the growth of our chapter is the formation of Partnerships with the business community and the many organizations that have a vested interest and common vision.
Thanks for your consideration in joining with us, as partners with a common mission.
The Saturday Leadership Academy (New For 2009)
The Saturday Leadership Academy is a nine (9) week Intervention Program, followed by a lifelong Citizenship Mentoring Program. The academy is designed to motivate young men of middle to high school age to achieve a higher level of success in school and as citizens.
During the Intervention Program (the first nine weeks) the young men are required to attend and participate in mentoring sessions from 9:00am - 12:00pm each Saturday morning. The parent or sponsor is required to attend the Orientation and participate in the evaluation of the student's behavior.
After completing the Intervention Program, the students will enter the Citizenship Mentoring Program, which is a life-long mentoring program designed to help the students mature into productive citizens. A mentor will be assigned to the young men that complete the Intervention Program. The mentors will continue to work with the young men making available to them the resources of the 100, to include scholarship funds for college.
Students must apply and be accepted into the program. There will be two classes held on Saturday's during the Intervention Program, one class of middle school age young men, and another class of high school age young men. There will be 15-25 young men in each class.
The program will be hosted at the Heyward Career and Technology Center.
The Business Summit (New For 2009)
The Business Summit is a networking and economic empowerment event held two to three times a year (June, and September based on sponsorships). The objective of this event is to bring the business and community leaders together and share information that will help the community prosper economically.
The Presenting and Associate Business Partners may have a booth presence along with a speaking part to share their career opportunities and products with the event attendees.
Attendees will be given an opportunity to share information regarding their business or other career opportunities that exist in their profession.
This quarterly event will be held at the Brookland Baptist Church Conference Center.
Health and Wellness Events (New for 2009)
The 100 BMOGC will support community based Heath and Wellness Events throughout 2009. Scheduled events include Harumbe in February, Take a Love One to the Doctor in April, and the first Men's Health Forum in June. We will continue to do health screenings doing the local college football games.
During these events the community will be asked to donate blood, complete bone marrow matches, check for diabetes and other diseases prevalent in the African-American community.
These three programs will be promoted through the local radio stations and other public service medias to encourage community participation (see the 2009 Media Plan).
Lunch Buddies Program
During the school year the 100 BMOGC conducts the Lunch Buddies Program with Lower Richland and Eau Claire High Schools.
On the third Wednesday of each month during the school year, students participating in the program are bused to the Brookland Baptist Church Conference Center where they have a lunch meeting with members of the 100 BMOGC.
Each student is assigned a mentor and the mentor/mentee relationship is enhanced by one-on-one contact throughout the school year and over the summer. Most students return the next year and continue to maintain a relationship with their mentor.
Lunch Connections Program (New for 2009)
On the first Wednesday of each month members of the 100 BMOGC conduct the Lunch Connections Program with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Young men participating in the program are required to maintain good behavior and demonstrate an improvement in their personal conduct. During the monthly sessions, the men of the 100 BMOGC cover a varied list of subjects determined by the young men participating in the program.
Each participant is assigned a mentor when they are released. The mentors serve as the primary link between the young men and the 100 BMOGC, and coordinates the support from the 100 BMOGC.
Our primary goal is to reduce the percentage of young men that return to the facility.
The Speakers Bureau (New for 2009)
The men of the 100 BMOGC will support schools and other organizations through our Speakers Bureau Program.
Through this program, schools and other organizations may request that we provide a speaker to address students and other groups.
Our membership is our greatest asset. We have community leaders and men of many professions and of considerable accomplishment in our organization.
Members of our organization are ready to share their story and the keys to their success.
College Scholarship Program
The 100 BMOGC provides four (4) year college scholarships to students selected through a competitive process and maintains an acceptable grade point average.
